Frequently Asked Questions

Same Day Surgery Center promotes and supports a patient and family-centered approach to care while maintaining safety and security for patients, caregivers, and physicians. There may be unique and extenuating circumstances that require compassionate exceptions to these guidelines.

What surgeries can be done at SDSC?

Your surgeon will determine if your specific procedure is appropriate for SDSC. We commonly perform surgeries in these specialties:

For a complete list of services, visit Our Services or ask your surgeon if your procedure can be performed at SDSC.

Having food or liquids in your stomach increases the chances of vomiting during or after surgery. If vomited material is inhaled into your lungs, it can cause serious complications, including pneumonia or death. This fasting requirement includes everything, even water, gum, candy, tobacco, formula, or breast milk. Your surgical team will give you specific fasting instructions based on your procedure time.

No. Any site preparation will be done at the facility unless your surgeon specifically instructs otherwise. Do not shave or scrub the surgical site before arrival.

Anesthesia affects your alertness, judgment, and coordination for up to 24 hours after surgery. You cannot drive yourself home, and you’ll need a responsible adult to stay with you for 24 hours after your procedure. This ensures you have help with daily activities and someone who can contact medical staff if complications arise.

A nurse will call you before your surgery to review your medical history, medications, and allergies. Please have this information ready:

During this call, the nurse will tell you which medications to take or stop on surgery day and your arrival time. If you miss our call, please return it as soon as possible. Our nurses are available 24/7 at (605) 755-9900.

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, such as sweatpants. Please remove all jewelry and body piercings before your procedure and leave them at home for your safety during surgery.

Bring your insurance card, photo ID, and any legal guardian papers if appropriate. If your child is having surgery, bring their favorite blanket, toy, pacifier, and sippy cup or bottle if appropriate.

You can stay with your loved one until they’re taken to the operating room, and you’ll rejoin them as soon as possible. The time in surgery varies by procedure type and how quickly they wake from anesthesia.

For pediatric patients: A parent or guardian must remain at the facility during your child’s entire visit.

SDSC has six private rooms for overnight stays with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3 or better. Your doctor will determine your length of stay based on your procedure.

If you’re staying overnight, feel free to bring your own toiletries, pillows, home medications, robe, and slippers. These items are also available at SDSC if needed.

Visiting hours are 7:30 am to 9:00 pm daily. We ask that families remember you’re here to rest and recuperate, so please use good judgment about visit length and number of visitors.

Once you’re moved from recovery to your post-op room, you’ll typically be allowed to eat and drink right away. After you’re tolerating food and liquids well, we’ll start your oral pain medication if prescribed. Your recovery time will vary based on your procedure and individual response.

Before you leave:

Our nurses are available 24/7 at (605) 755-9930 if questions arise after you leave.

If your doctor writes you a prescription, this will need to be filled at your pharmacy of choice. Any return appointments required by your doctor will be scheduled prior to your discharge and instructions as to when to call your doctor will be provided. Remember SDSC staffs nurses 24 hours a day to answer your questions as they may arise. You can call our staff at 605-755-9930.
