Pediatric Surgery & Care

Our child-friendly approach is designed to reduce anxiety and create a positive experience for your family. Reducing stress on the child and their parents.

Minimal Needles: Most blood work and IV placement are done after your child is comfortably under anesthesia, so they won’t experience needle sticks while awake.

You Stay Together: You can stay with your child right up until they enter the operating room, and you’ll be reunited as soon as possible.

Bring Comfort from Home: You are encouraged to bring their favorite toys, blankets, pacifiers, and sippy cups.

Pediatric Expertise: Our nurses hold advanced certifications in pediatric care and have extensive experience working with children.

Preparing for Surgery

Same Day Surgery Center and your doctors work as a team to provide you with quality anesthesia and surgical services. Be sure to ask your doctor to schedule your surgery at SDSC.

The Week Before Surgery
  • Your medical history will be reviewed with one of our anesthesiologists.
  • If you are taking any kind of medication, please have names and dosages available. The nurse reviewing your medical history will give you instructions as to what you should take prior to surgery. If you will be spending the night, please bring your medications in their original containers with you.
  • Notify your doctor if you take any blood pressure medications, weight loss medications, you are diabetic or if you are taking a blood thinner or aspirin.
  • A nurse will call you to obtain medical history and give you instructions including your arrival time prior to your scheduled surgery at SDSC.
  • Notify you doctor if you experience any health changes between your last visit and the day of surgery such as a cold, fever, flu, sore on the skin, etc.
  • DO arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to SDSC and to drive you home after surgery.
  • DO shower or bathe the day of or the night before surgery.
  • DO plan on remaining in the building the entire length of your child’s stay. If you plan on bringing other small children with you it is helpful to have additional help to care for these children. Your child having surgery is going to require additional attention from you the day of surgery.
  • DO pack personal items, if you are planning on spending the night that will make your stay more comfortable, for example: toothbrush, hairbrush, toothpaste, reading material, etc. SDSC can provide you with these items, but patients generally prefer their own things (items).
  • DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. This includes gum, cough drops, hard candy, coffee, tea, soda, or water. If you do not follow this rule (protocol) for your surgery may have to be delayed or rescheduled.
  • DO NOT drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours before surgery.
  • DO shower or bathe the day of or the night before surgery.
  • DO wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing that you can change easily and will not bind (restrict) your surgery site.
  • DO bring insurance card (Medicare, Medicaid, Commercial, Military ID or any papers with identifying numbers and a picture identification (Driver’s License, Military ID, Passport or Tribal ID).
  • DO arrive at the time instructed by SDSC nurse.
  • DO NOT use hair sprays or body lotions.
  • DO NOT apply makeup especially mascara or lipstick.
  • DO Follow instructions provided by SDSC. We will give you specific fasting instructions based on your procedure time.
  • ****** This is very important to prevent your surgery from being delayed or rescheduled. If you have any questions in reference to what you can eat or drink prior to surgery or your arrival time, contact us at 755-9930.
  • DO NOT wear jewelry or watches to SDSC. All metal jewelry and piercings need to be removed prior to surgery.
  • DO NOT bring large amounts of cash or valuables to SDSC. You will need payment to fill any prescriptions that the doctor should write for you. SDSC does not have a pharmacy so any prescriptions would need to be filled at the pharmacy of your choice.
  • We suggest that you limit the number of people that accompany you to SDSC to better protect the privacy of other patients and to allow you the necessary rest to recover from your procedure.
  • Dentures and hearing aids may be worn but may need to be removed prior to surgery depending on the type of surgery and anesthesia that you will require.
  • Contact lenses will need to be removed for most procedures. Please bring your contact storage case to safely store your contacts during your surgery.
  • You will spend approximately 1-3 hours at SDSC after your surgery for care and instructions.
  • You must have a responsible adult drive you home and it is recommended for someone to stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.
  • The nurses and physicians will answer your questions and go over your post-surgical instructions with you and your support person prior to your dismissal. You will receive a written copy of these instructions. Please follow them carefully.
  • For 24 hours after surgery DO NOT:
  • Drive any vehicle
  • Operate any machinery or power tool
  • Drink any alcoholic beverages
  • Make any important decisions
  • Assume responsibility for the care of others
  • Take any sleeping pills or tranquilizers without your doctor’s permission
  • It is natural to experience some discomfort in the area of your surgery. You may also experience some drowsiness or dizziness depending on the type of anesthesia you receive, or the amount of pain medication you are taking at home.
  • DO NOT take part in any strenuous activity until advised by your surgeon.
  • Follow the post-operative instructions given to you.
  • One of our nurses will attempt to call you a day or so after your surgery to make sure that you are recovering comfortably or you may contact us at 605-755-9930.
  • Contact your physician if you experience problems after discharge from SDSC. If you cannot contact your doctor but feel your concerns warrant a doctor’s attention, call or go to the nearest emergency room.
  • It is natural to experience some discomfort in the area of your surgery. You may also experience some drowsiness or dizziness depending on the type of anesthesia you receive, or the amount of pain medication you are taking at home.

As a patient at Same Day Surgery Center, you have rights and responsibilities. Knowing your rights can help you and the health care professionals work better as a team. This will improve the care you receive as a patient.

Below is an outline of your rights and responsibilities. If you are under 18 years of age, these rights and responsibilities will be carried out by your parents or guardian.

Your Rights:

As a patient, you can expect:

  • Considerate and respectful care consistent with sound nursing and medical practice. This includes permitting you to follow spiritual and cultural practices that do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of therapy for you.
  • Access to services and care the Surgery Center is able to provide and that is medically indicated without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, or source of payment.
  • To know the identity of Surgery Center personnel and their professional status and to know the name of the physician responsible for your medical care.
  • To be given information so you can make informed decisions about your care. If you exhibit a lack of understanding, Surgery Center personnel will contact your physician so the physician can provide current information on your diagnosis, treatment, and/or prognosis (to the extent they are known) and so (except in emergencies) you can knowledgeably participate in decisions involving your care. This includes necessary information on the consequences of refusing treatment.
  • To be given information concerning advance directives and to have your advance directive implemented to the extent it is known, and within state laws and Surgery Center policies. This includes being informed of why an advance directive is not being implemented and having care transferred to other professionals or facilities at your request and upon the receiving professional's or facility's approval.
  • Personal privacy as you reasonably request and subject to the Surgery Center's ability to provide adequate medical and nursing care. If there are sufficient rooms available in the appropriate areas of care, the Surgery Center will accommodate your request to transfer to a different room.
  • Confidential treatment of your medical records and other medical information-unless otherwise required by law; unless you consent to the release of this information; or unless and to the extent disclosure is required to assure continuity of care for you. The Surgery Center's general admission consent and other policies allow the Surgery Center to disclose your name, address, sex, and general condition, and to disclose all or portions of your medical record to persons or entities (e.g., insurance companies or other payers) who may be responsible for all or a portion of the Surgery Center's charges. You may review your medical record while hospitalized with the physician's permission and may receive a copy of the record after discharge upon signing a release and payment of the Surgery Center's reasonable charges.
  • To have your pain measured regularly and pain treatment initiated.
  • Transfer to another facility for appropriate care when medically indicated and ordered by your physician. Your consent and the new facility's acceptance of you as a patient will be obtained by the physician prior to transfer.
  • Information concerning your continuing health care needs after discharge from the Surgery Center (e.g., medications, appointments) as ordered by the physician.
  • To be informed when you are participating in experimental or investigational care or research. You may refuse to participate in experimental or investigational treatment or research, but your consent is not required for statistical research.
  • A physical environment meeting accepted industry safety standards and relevant building codes.
  • If requested, assistance in arranging for consultation with a medical specialist at your expense.
  • An explanation of Surgery Center rules or procedures that affect you.
  • An interpreter or other communication device if you do not speak or understand English, or have a disability affecting communication.
  • Upon request, an itemized bill or an explanation of the bill, regardless of the source of payment.
  • To be told of the procedure to make a complaint and to receive a response to a complaint made without recrimination.

Your Responsibilities:

As a patient, you should:
  • Provide, to the best of your ability, accurate and complete information about present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, advance directives, and any other information concerning your health
  • Tell nursing or other health care personnel if you experience unexpected changes in your condition or if you do not understand or consent to proposed treatment or diagnostic or surgical procedures. Ask questions if there are doubts or concerns.
  • Tell nursing or other health care personnel if you don't understand what you are expected to do to participate in your care.
  • Tell nursing or other health care personnel if you refuse treatment or desire limitations on care.
  • Follow the instructions of nursing and other health care personnel as prescribed by the physician or other practitioner responsible for your care.
  • Follow Surgery Center rules and procedures.
  • Be considerate of other patients and Surgery Center personnel. Assist in controlling noise, the number of visitors. No smoking is permitted on the Surgery Center property.
  • Respect other people's and the Surgery Center's property.
  • Assure the financial obligations for your health care are fulfilled as promptly as possible. Charges will be based on services provided.
